The Georg-August-University of Göttingen, Germany, invites PhD candidates and Postdoc scholars to discuss the idea of “multiple modernities” based on course literature, morning lectures by accomplished scholars, as well as participants’ papers in Göttingen from September 1 to 5, 2014.

The expression has been introduced by Shmuel Eisenstadt arguing against the understanding of modernity as a uniform global phenomenon. Eisenstadt’s approach has been criticised especially for playing down the political in favor of the cultural dimension. While the summer school does not focused on questions of transnational regulation, readers of this blog may enjoy the opportunity for conceptual discussion.

In the call (pdf) the organizers ask for a CV, list of publications (if available), and an abstract of no more than 500 words. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2014. Selected papers are going to be published.
